Our middle school program focuses on building strong academic knowledge and skills to prepare students for success in high school, and life. An emphasis on character and global citizenship allows students to recognize their impact both as individuals and as part of a collaborative team, inspiring them to work towards their true potential. Small classes support development that leads to confident students who know how to stand in their strengths.  Our middle school curriculum is rigorous and challenging. Students who will experience success at High Park Day School are:

  • Self-motivated and engaged learners
  • Independent
  • Positive in their attitudes towards learning
  • Co-operative and collaborative

Academics

We teach the Ontario Curriculum through an engaging Inquiry and Project-Based Learning (PBL) program.

Our Language and Math programs are appropriately leveled to give students the enrichment they need to develop a strong foundation of core skills required for higher-level learning. Skills needed for high school success such as test-taking, organization and time management, are taught explicitly to help students prepare for the next stage of their academic careers.

Interdisciplinary classes naturally intertwine Science, History, Geography and Media Literacy into rich and meaningful learning opportunities. Our Inquiry and Project-Based Learning approach drives students to engage in work that has context and purpose. Our students develop a deeper understanding of content knowledge and complex concepts and become self-motived learners.

Technology is integrated into all aspects of our program predominantly through the use of iPads. Students develop the skills needed to become ethical digital citizens in a technology-based society. Our students learn how to use technology as a tool for creation, research and to connect meaningfully and responsibly with others.

Skills Focus

The digital age is quickly transforming the landscape of education to one where skills take priority over knowledge. We focus on the development of the 21st Century Skills to ensure our students have a foundation for success in our ever-changing world.

  • Collaboration
  • Communication
  • Creativity and Innovation
  • Critical Thinking

A strong character is paramount to becoming responsible and capable citizens. Our Character Skills focus for middle school students helps them to further develop roles as leaders and collaborators. We foster:

  • Reflection
  • Self-awareness
  • Responsibility
  • Open-mindedness
  • Resilience
  • Global Perspectives

Community Connections

Our middle school students have opportunities to become actively involved and connected with members of our Toronto communities. For example, students gain valuable experience and life-skills volunteering through our partnership with Karma Co-op. Through Project-Based Learning students learn how to confidently seek out experts in our community as an important source of knowledge and learning. PBL also allows our students to contribute authentic solutions to real challenges within our community.

Transitioning to High School

Graduates of High Park Day School advance to traditional (i.e. public/separate) and independent/private schools. Students are prepared to enter regular high school programs and also receive individualized support with their efforts to enter specialized programs. Our team works with each family to help them find the right school and path for their child to ensure they continue to reach their potential and experience success.
